The Women in the Arts & Media Coalition, Inc. will present the 2015 Collaboration Award recognizing Women Working with Women.

The $1,000 Collaboration Award and additional honorable mentions are designed to encourage professional women in the arts and media from different specializations to work collaboratively on the creation of a new artistic work.  As the aim of the award is to encourage women to work collaboratively with women of other disciplines, each collaborative team must be comprised of female members of different Coalition associations, unions, guilds and affiliates of The Coalition.  Eligible teams may submit any form of creative collaboration on a new work that had its first public performance within the last two years 2013-2015. The team that has been selected and the honorable mentions will be invited to be recognized at an awards ceremony in New York in October 2015.  Women outside of New York may send a designee to speak about their project and accept the award.

Ana y yo is a documentary about Primavera Ruiz and her family. Primavera’s mother, Ana, is the ultimate matriarch. After a tragic accident in the family, Ana adopted two children from Equatorial Guinea as a single mother, and goes onto train her eight children to become an internationally renowned equestrian vaulting team. Primavera explores the whirlwind that is her mother and the impact Ana’s decisions have had on the family, in an effort to strengthen the bond between her two adopted sisters who no longer speak. Primavera digs deep into family history asking forbidden questions over the course of four years. SHE'S BEAUTIFUL WHEN SHE'S ANGRY resurrects the buried history of the outrageous, often brilliant women who founded the modern women's movement from 1966 to 1971.

SHE'S BEAUTIFUL takes us from the founding of NOW, when ladies wore hats and gloves, to the emergence of more radical factions of women's liberation; from intellectuals like Kate Millett to the street theatrics of WITCH (Women's International Conspiracy from Hell!).

SHE'S BEAUTIFUL aims not to romanticize the early movement, but to dramatize it in its exhilarating, quarrelsome, sometimes heart-wrenching glory. The film does not shy away from the controversies over race, sexual identity and leadership that arose in the women's movement.

SHE'S BEAUTIFUL WHEN SHE'S ANGRY captures the spirit of the time -- thrilling, scandalous, and often hilarious.

A Conversation with Lee Grant
Event: Monday Oct. 27, 2014

Join us for an evening with Lee Grant, whose talent, intelligence, grit and passion have made her one of the most respected and beloved figures in the entertainment world. Grant first gained acclaim as an award-winning star of stage and screen, then went on to have a distinguished three-decade career as a director, a remarkable achievement for a woman of her day. In 1989, Women in Film honored Grant with its first ever Lifetime Achievement Award.  She received NYWIFT's Muse Award in 2004.

Among Lee Grant's numerous achievements: she won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for Shampoo and directed the Oscar-winning documentary Down and Out in America. She has appeared many times on Broadway and in such memorable films as Detective Story (for which she received her first Oscar nomination and the Best Actress Award at the Cannes Film Festival), In the Heat of the Night, Valley of the Dolls, The Landlord, Plaza Suite, Portnoy's Complaint, Voyage of the Damned, Airport 77 and Defending Your Life. She also appeared on the television shows Peyton Place (for which she won an Emmy), The Neon Ceiling (her second Emmy win) and the innovative 1970s series Fay.
Grant directed Nobody's Child (winner of a Director's Guild Award), The Stronger, Tell Me a Riddle, What Sex Am I?, The Willmar 8, The Gun Deadlock, When Women Kill and many other documentaries, as well as more than 40 episodes of Intimate Portrait for Lifetime.
Grant was born Lyova Haskell Rosenthal in New York City, the only child of upper-middle class Jewish immigrants. At the age of four, she performed on stage at the Met in the 1931 production of L'Oracolo. A precocious teenager, she was a student at the renowned Neighborhood Playhouse and later a member of the fabled Actors Studio under the direction of Lee Strasberg. By the age of 24, Grant was a Broadway star, a Vogue "It Girl" and an Academy Award nominee for her role in Detective Story. It all came crashing down in the 1950s when, because of one courageous speech and her association with her leftist husband, she was put on the Hollywood blacklist, which prevented her from working in film and television. Grant was finally exonerated after twelve years and continues to reinvent herself to this day.

Grant recounts her fascinating story in her new memoir, I Said Yes to Everything. There will be a book signing directly following the event.

Film critic Jeffrey Lyons will be conducting the interview with Grant.

Jeffrey Lyons has enjoyed a career in television, radio and print media spanning 42 years. He has reviewed more than 15,000 movies, and 900 Broadway and off-Broadway plays; written or co-authored six books; and co-hosted three national movie review shows on PBS, MSNBC and NBC stations, interviewing nearly every movie star of the past four decades. He has received two honorary degrees, and lectured in venues all over the country including  the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C., and the National Baseball Hall of Fame. On radio, he reviews movies and Broadway shows, and has conducted interviews with major stars for WCBS and CBS. He's now heard on WNYM radio in New York, is the critic for the Mutual Broadcasting System and CBC Radio Canada. Lyons Den Radio is his current nationally syndicated outlet.
In 2004, Lyons created and co-hosted Reel Talk. He also reviews movies with his son Ben Lyons who is correspondent and film critic for the syndicated TV series Extra.

WMM Acquires THE SUPREME PRICE - Our SWAN Day 2014 Film!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

WOMEN MAKE MOVIES ACQUIRES TIMELY & POWERFUL DOCUMENTARY
"THE SUPREME PRICE" ABOUT WOMEN IN NIGERIA,
SHOWING AT FESTIVALS NATIONWIDE

New York, NY, May 21, 2014 –  Women Make Movies is proud to announce the acquisition of THE SUPREME PRICE for its 2014 New Release collection. The film will be playing at six film festivals nationwide including a special pre-festival press screening on May 29th at the IFC Center and will have its premiere at the Human Rights Watch Film Festivals in Chicago & New York.

Shedding light on the recent history of Nigerian politics, THE SUPREME PRICE gives us a deeper understanding into the current human rights crisis in Nigeria regarding the kidnapping of over 200 girls by the militant Islamist group Boko Haram. Joanna Lipper's extraordinary film is a feature length documentary that traces the evolution of the Pro-Democracy Movement in Nigeria and efforts to increase the participation of women in leadership roles. Following the annulment of her father's victory in Nigeria's Presidential Election and her mother's assassination by agents of the military dictatorship, Hafsat Abiola faces the challenge of transforming a corrupt culture of governance into a democracy capable of serving Nigeria's most marginalized population: women.

In this riveting thriller, politics in Nigeria is a do or die affair. Filmmaker Joanna Lipper combines daring reporting, exclusive interviews and behind-the-scenes access shot during numerous trips to the unstable country with incredible, heart-stopping archival footage from some of the nation's most tumultuous, violent and corrupt periods during the past fifty years. A startlingly intimate rendering of the epic and tragic Abiola family saga set against the backdrop of the landmark 1993 Presidential Election and its aftermath, THE SUPREME PRICE provides a unprecedented look inside of Africa's most populous nation, exposing a deep history of political corruption and a culture where a tiny circle of political elites monopolize billions of dollars worth of oil revenue while the vast majority of 165 million Nigerian people remain impoverished.  This film highlights the courage of human rights heroine, Kudirat Abiola who died a martyr.  In present-day Nigeria, her enduring legacy inspires her eldest daughter, Hafsat, and a small, empowered group of Muslim and Christian women to work together in solidarity.  These women put their lives at risk to offer a glimmer of hope and the potential for growth, change and a new style of leadership to an ethnically and religiously divided country that has seen its potential for greatness unrealized since gaining independence from Great Britain in 1960.

THE SUPREME PRICE was produced with the assistance of WMM's renowned Production Assistance Programs which helps women filmmakers get their films on to the screen. Other films in the 2014 Human Rights Watch Film Festival New York that came from the program include E-TEAM, WATCHERS OF THE SKY, SEPIDEH, OUT IN THE NIGHT, and DANGEROUS ACTS STARRING THE UNSTABLE ELEMENTS OF BELARUS.

Women Make Movies looks forward to handling sales and distribution of THE SUPREME PRICE in the US and Canada.

NYWIFT presents:
Womens' Work: Film , TV, Musical Theatre and Game Composers
Event: Wednesday May 14, 2014

"Women in general rarely get any press within the film and television industry, which contributes to the perception that there are no women composing for film and television,
which contributes to the perception that there are no women to hire for the good films that get the press and eventually the awards nominations, extending the decades long lack of women getting awarded in the industry, which feeds the perception that there are no women composers, and the cycle continues.
I hear it and see it all the time".
- Female Music Executive in a piece of private correspondence
Our panel of talented musical storytellers is sure to ignite a lively and engaging discussion about the issues facing female composers. With first class credits across a wide variety of disciplines, panelists will share career strategies, major issues within the industry and some juicy anecdotes along the way.

temp scores, sample libraries, copyright agreements between director and composers, vertical layering in game composition, collaboration on big Broadway shows and more!

Bias in Reality Television with the Editors Collective
Event: Thursday May 8, 2014

The Editors Collective (EC) has partnered with NYWIFT to present a conversation about reality television content that promotes negative stereotypes (racial, gender, sexual orientation, etc.).
Working in reality television, many producers and editors are asked to craft shows with material that reinforces negative bias, and are unsure how to best intervene. This panel aims to encourage solidarity and a sense of agency among producers and editors who want to affect change in the reality television industry.
