From the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Crimes of the Heart, comes the breathtaking tall tale of Bess and Macon, two mail-order brides lured to the plains of Wyoming by the promise of new beginnings. Beth Henley's fierce and funny adventure spans a 25 year friendship as wild and unpredictable as the untamed West itself, unearthing along the way, the dark underside of American mythology and the unbreakable bonds of female friendship.

There is a new immersive realm for the senses online, a virtual playground where those who plug in are coaxed into acting out their darkest fantasies--with no consequences in the "real" world. Or so it seems... until a young female detective begins an investigation to determine if there is a point at which thought or intention may actually constitute a crime within--and outside of--this new frontier.

SPOILED dives beneath the unspoken truths of fathers and sons, brothers and lovers - both in America and India - in this solo play that uncovers the tangled, messy roots of violence against women by embodying the male point of view. Ripped from headlines that dominate the news in New York and New Delhi, this timely play grapples with burning issues such as military sexual assaults, college frat parties, impotent jobless boys, vulnerable child brides and infanticide. Through a lens that is compassionate yet clear-eyed, SPOILED reveals how rigid gender roles box in both sexes, with devastating consequences for all.

Enact legislation guaranteeing women equal access & opportunity for employment in government funded arts organizations.

Legislation should be enacted whereby any arts organization or institution that is receiving city, state or federal funding should be mandated to allocate an equitable portion of that funding to women artists, thereby ensuring that they receive grants and/or employment opportunities that are traditionally denied them. For example, in the American Theatre women receive less than 20% of production opportunities nationwide. With this new legislation, women theatre artists across the board-playwrights, directors, designers, etc. -would have a fair shot at working and/or creating in their chosen field. Commercial producers will continue to produce whomever they choose-man or woman. But, when government monies are involved there should be a mandate for parity in the disbursement of those dollars.

Through Olivia's struggles and recoveries, her family members contemplate the habits that they have created to help them get through the day with a feeling of greater control over life's uncertainties.

When first noticing his wife at the age of sixteen, Sam could not predict the profound connection they would share-they are two halves of the same whole. In their 33rd year of marriage, that love was tested...and the ringing in Sam's ear was not as one would expect, in fact it was an orchestra, playing the music of his life--The Actual Dance.

Moonlight Sonata, written and directed by Brona Crehan and featuring Grainne Duddy, made it to the finals at Manhattan Rep's winter one act competition.  Thirty plays participated and six move on to the finals on January 29 and 30 at 6.30pm and 9.00pm each night - so four more performances.  We are delighted that Moonlight Sonata will be one of the lucky six.

For many in the United States, the feminist movement has been reduced to vicious stereotypes that are still repeated today: feminists are angry, man-hating, childless, unmarried, and the awful list goes on and on.

During the winter of 1952, British authorities entered the home of mathematician, cryptanalyst and war hero Alan Turing (Benedict Cumberbatch) to investigate a reported burglary. They instead ended up arresting Turing himself on charges of 'gross indecency', an accusation that would lead to his devastating conviction for the criminal offense of homosexuality - little did officials know, they were actually incriminating the pioneer of modern-day computing. Famously leading a motley group of scholars, linguists, chess champions and intelligence officers, he was credited with cracking the so-called unbreakable codes of Germany's World War II Enigma machine. An intense and haunting portrayal of a brilliant, complicated man, THE IMITATION GAME follows a genius who under nail-biting pressure helped to shorten the war and, in turn, save thousands of lives. Lea DeLaria seems to have achieved overnight stardom with her stand-out role as Big Boo in the Netflix hit series Orange is the New Black. In fact, Lea was the first queer comic to perform on television in America which launched her into world recognition.  Prior to her success onOrange, she appeared in countless television series (includingCalifornicationLaw and Order SVUWill and Grace), films (First Wives Club) and on and off Broadway.  As if that's not enough, she has five records on the Warner Jazz and Classics label and her book, Lea's Book of Rules for the World is in its third printing.

Marina Franklin is emerging as one of the hottest comedians in the comedy scene today, with notable appearances on Wanda Sykes'Herlarious, Showtime's Women Who KillThe Late Late Show with Craig FergusonThe Jay Leno ShowChapelle's ShowTough Crowd with Colin Quinn, Season 2 of NBC's Last Comic Standing andShowtime at the Apollo.  Based in New York, she is a favorite in Comedy Festivals across the world.  Originally from Chicago, Franklin made her acting debut at the Illinois Rep Theatre and earned her MFA in acting at Syracuse University.  Franklin is viciously likeable, if there is such a thing.

Judy Gold, Emmy Award winning actress and comedian, is best known as the star of her two critically acclaimed, long running Off Broadway hit shows: The Judy Show - My Life as a Sitcom and 25 Questions for a Jewish Mother. In addition to numerous guest starring appearances on television (including 30 Rock2 Broke GirlsUgly Betty), her many hosting duties have included The View, Comedy Central's 100 Greatest Stand-ups of All Time and the GLAAD Media Awards. Her stand-up specials include Comedy Central Presents: Judy GoldTough Crowd Stands Up and her own HBO half-hour special, for which she received the Cable Ace Award.  Judy won two Emmy Awards for writing and producing The Rosie O'Donnell Show.

M. Blair Breard is the Executive Producer on the award winning comedy series entitled Louie. She also produced Louis C.K. Live from the Beacon Theater, and Louis C.K. Oh My God for HBO. Next year, Ms. Breard will executive produce, with Louis C.K., a comedy series starring Zach Galifianakis, entitled Baskets.

Bonnie McFarlane
(Moderator) is a national headlining comedian who has performed several times on The Late Show with David Letterman, has an HBO special, a Comedy Central special and an adorable 7 year old daughter. But don't ask her to pick a favorite because she loves them all equally.  She most recently directed a movie called Women Aren't Funny that she calls "probably the most important film of our generation." You can get it on iTunes.  Big act, Rich Vos is her husband. She's required by marriage vows to include him in any bio.

Presided over by the Hindu god Ganesh, a pair of teenagers become unexpected heroes, an immigrant accountant struggles with visibility, and two stifled romantics begin to stumble toward each other during one strangely warm winter in Central Harlem. When January Feels Like Summer follows five colliding lives as a feeling of change hums in the air and the many flavors of desire saturate the streets and subways and bodegas of the city. ADVOCACY CORNER

"The New York Times posed this question on April 29 when the Tony nominations were announced. It's a problem that's getting long in the tooth; for years we've known that over 60 percent of the ticket buyers and "butts in seats" are women, and yet less than 20 percent of the stories staged are written, directed or designed by them. Hmm...."

10170813_446273828850718_1404518256103803257_n 2FAB--a group of women playwrights writing plays FOR AND ABOU T WOMEN. Directed by women, and featuring women in them.

Thanksgiving features 4 women. It is about 2 women who are involved with the same man, their confrontation, and surprise at the story that unfolds. The mothers of the 2 women are also featured as a more expansive view of women's roles in the past.

We have the power to effect change. Share our initiative by forwarding this email to your friends (use the link below or simply forward from your mail client). Share our social media pages and support shows that support women theatre artists!

Coalition Organization Members!

We are so pleased to announce our newest Affiliate Member Organizations: Works by Women and The Lambs,Inc.
Welcome!! Check out both these terrific organizations on our website and on theirs!

We are also continuing to develop our new wonderful
Women in the Arts & Media Communal Calendar. Over the next few months, we will be contacting and including the calendars of every major arts and media organization and every major women's organization: all events, openings, and deadlines. This will serve a dual purpose:  1) terrific information about current events; and 2) a place to check what else might be happening on any date in the future when planning--the ultimate Blackout Calendar. This is a Google calendar, and so can be added to your own Google calendar. Please send all events to us at: calendar@womenartsmediacoalition.org or submit it on our website. All of you can help us make this calendar THE central place for events and programs of interest.

Below, we have two FREE events and an Advocacy March. REMEMBER:  if you are a member of any of our member orgs, you are a member of the Coalition!  See list of member organizations at the bottom of this newsletter.

Check the offers out below, and find more events on our
Online Communal Calendar. If you have any problem reading  these flyers, you can see them on our Online Blog.

Hope to see you soon,

NYWIFT presents:
Womens' Work: Film , TV, Musical Theatre and Game Composers
Event: Wednesday May 14, 2014

"Women in general rarely get any press within the film and television industry, which contributes to the perception that there are no women composing for film and television,
which contributes to the perception that there are no women to hire for the good films that get the press and eventually the awards nominations, extending the decades long lack of women getting awarded in the industry, which feeds the perception that there are no women composers, and the cycle continues.
I hear it and see it all the time".
- Female Music Executive in a piece of private correspondence
Our panel of talented musical storytellers is sure to ignite a lively and engaging discussion about the issues facing female composers. With first class credits across a wide variety of disciplines, panelists will share career strategies, major issues within the industry and some juicy anecdotes along the way.

Come for a new perspective on the universal concerns of composers:
temp scores, sample libraries, copyright agreements between director and composers, vertical layering in game composition, collaboration on big Broadway shows and more!

This program was made possible by the generous support of the Betty R. and Ralph Sheffer Foundation.
Works by Women, which was founded by Ludovica Villar-Hauser in 2009, supports theatrical work written, directed, and/or designed by women by promoting the work on our website, in the press and on social media. We organize groups of theatre goers to see productions, thus supporting women theatre artists and the theaters that hire them with our time and dollars!

Please sign up for the Works by Women mailing list.  We only send one email a week (see our most recent update here) and it is filled with great information about upcoming Works by Women “Play” dates as well as qualifying productions (50% of the writers, directors, and designers working on a production must be women) throughout the city.
We are currently supporting a total of 5 LPTW member productions!

Join us for a "Play" Date!
