Since its creation in 1994, NPTC Women’s Work Project has had the goal of not only helping to develop specific plays, but to support residents’ growth as accomplished and skilled playwrights—to give writers added tools in the practice of their craft and to strengthen their individual voices. Our focus has always been on bringing scripts to production quality.
The WOMEN’S WORK LAB for short plays provides a supportive and nurturing environment to emerging and mid-career women playwrights. Four to six members are selected each year, along with a similar number of directors. The LAB meets monthly (Sundays, 4-7pm) from February through July, allowing for time in between sessions for writers to continue to develop and revise their work in response to feedback. Members are expected to bring work to each session beginning with the development of an original short play based upon an assigned theme. Playwrights receive monthly feedback on their play from the LAB’s group of dramaturgs and directors. Feedback is given in a unified manner so playwrights do not have conflicting advice about what to work on. The process creates a collaborative group from which members can draw inspiration and energy. Scripts are then produced in our annual Women's Work Short Play Festival. Participants in the Short Play Lab may be invited to submit a proposal for a full-length work and continue working with the LAB in the spring.
Playwrights should apply by sending the following as email attachments, with the email Subject Line “Women’s Work Application,” followed by this month’s #StageOpps code, to contact@nptnyc.org:
- a resume, including specific information on your training as a writer (i.e. degree program, workshops, etc.)
- a 10-15 page writing sample
- a personal statement explaining why you wish to be a part of the LAB, including goals for your own growth and development if selected

Atlanta Fringe Festival (June 3-7, 2015; Atlanta, GA) - The Atlanta Fringe Festival is dedicated to connecting adventurous artists with appreciative audiences for the betterment of the Atlanta arts community. We are looking for shows from any genre: cabaret, modern dance, comedy, drama, puppetry, circus, opera, improv, aerial, musicals, projection, etc. Shows must be 30-55 minutes long, no more, no less. There is a non-refundable $25 fee to apply, and if you are selected in our random lottery, there is a $250 production fee that goes toward paying for technicians and house managers to run your show. Midtown International Theatre Festival (July 13 - August 9, 2015; New York, NY) - We welcome any kind of stage play, musical or otherwise, new or classical, mainstream or specifically focused on an ethnic or cultural niche, even new interpretations of classical plays. We also encourage productions of all racial and sexual stripes, in all genres. The chief restrictions on submissions are the length of a show and how well it can be done with minimal scenery in a festival setting. Otherwise, three things make up a successful entry in the MITF: a good play, acompetent producer, and a marketing plan. It takes all three to field a successful Festival entry. Samuel French Off Off Broadway Short Play Festival (August 3-9, 2015; New York, NY) - Attention playwrights! The time has come to unpack your short plays and get them ready to submit to the 40th Annual Samuel French Off Off Broadway Short Play Festival. We are now accepting submissions! Playwrights (not published with Samuel French Inc. or any other major theatrical publisher) are welcome to submit up to 3 plays, each running 10-30 minutes in length. There is a $10 submission fee per play. Application requires the sign off of you as producer, or your own separate producer, who will produce the play to participate in the festival. Planet Connections Theatre Festivity (June 15 - July 12, 2015; NYC, NY) - The Planet Connections Theatre Festivity, New York’s premiere socially conscious/eco-friendly, not-for-profit theatre festival, is currently accepting submissions for its 2015 season. The festivity accepts all topics and subject matters (not just environmental!) including but not limited to: new works, musicals, adaptations, one-acts, and solo shows. The deadline for all submissions is January 21st. The Festivity is designed to invoke the power of art in motivating philanthropy, community outreach and social change. Forget Me Not Theatre Company 2016 New Work Production (Chicago, IL) - Forget Me Not Theatre Company’s New Work Series bridges the gap between a workshop and a world première. Our goal is to work alongside a playwright in the final stages of script development to challenge their concept of what the play can and should be in an effort to bring their world to life in the most vibrant way possible. To this end the playwright is invited into the rehearsal room for a two-week workshop designed to foster play, discovery, and iteration. Since the New Work Series requires the playwright to be in-residence for the two-week workshop they must be local to Chicago, IL OR be able to travel and provide their own lodging. Fusion’s THE SEVEN (Albuquerque, NM) - THE SEVEN, Fusion’s 10th annual short works festival, is one of the nation's premiere short works festivals. It features seven fully produced world-premieres, utilizing seven different directors and a professional ensemble cast. The scripts are read by a jury of theatre professionals (blindly, without any identification of the playwright) and the seven highest scoring scripts will be produced. The overall Jury Award-winner will receive transportation to and lodging at the festival. Scripts must be based on the theme: "UNFINISHED BUSINESS". Indie Boots (Chicago, IL) - Indie Boots is currently accepting short play submissions for the third annual festival featuring independent theatre with different perspectives on whose stories are worth telling, what\'s funny, and how the world works. All plays must use the word \"Ella\" in the title of the piece. Plays under 10 minutes, comedies, and plays featuring underrepresented characters (women, LGBTQ characters, etc) are especially encouraged. The finalists will be performed this spring in Chicago, IL as part of Indie Boots Theatre Festival 2015: The Ella Plays. An audience award (and cash!) will be presented to one play. **Artemisia’s Fall Festival** (Fall 2015, Chicago) - Seeking plays that are full length and must be carried by a woman. We require a leading, female protagonist. Artemisia produces plays that empower women. Due to the number of submissions we receive, submission is limited to ONE play per writer. If you submit more than one play, your submissions will NOT be considered. Full-length is defined by a playing time of 90 minutes or more. Rough Writers New Play Festival (Colorado Springs, CO) - The Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center is proud to be producing our bi-annual Rough Writers New Play Festival in the spring of 2015. This two week-long festival will feature readings of new scripts submitted by playwrights worldwide. Playwrights whose work is included in the festival will have the opportunity to have readings of their scripts in front of an audience with a moderated talkback session immediately following. A panel of theatre professionals will adjudicate the submissions. In an effort to celebrate the FAC’s “Year of Georgia O’Keeffe”, we ask that this year’s submissions be related to the life and/or the work of Georgia O’Keeffe. The plays may utilize Georgia O’Keeffe as a character, use her art as a springboard for the story or, in a larger sense, explore the lives and art of groundbreaking women. The submissions may be full-length, one-act or 10-minute plays or musicals. Submissions must be in a state of development, and not have a history of productions. The Rough Writers New Play Festival will be held between June 4 and 14, 2015. HRC Showcase Theatre (Hudson, NY) - Each submitted play should be previously unpublished, run no more than 90 minutes (excluding intermission), require no more than six actors, and be suitable for presentation as a staged reading by Equity actors. No musicals or children’s plays will be considered. The 2013-2014 HRC season runs from September, 2015 to June, 2016. Several of the previous prize winners "BILLY AND RAY" and "HELLMAN VS McCarthy" have recently gone on to be produced off-broadway in New York. Judges will select the winner of the W. Keith Hedrick award ($500), which will be presented as the final staged reading of the season. **Leah Ryan’s Fund for Emerging Women Writers** – Aims to encourage brilliant and unrecognized women playwrights with a cash prize and a New York City showcase of the winning work. Submissions must be full-length works for theatre, but the form is open to one-acts, two-acts (or more), monologues, adaptations, and any other “wild or deceptively tame” form. Winner will receive a $1,000 cash prize as well as a staged reading of her play in New York City. A stipend of up to $700 may be provided for travel and accommodation. Submit up to 10 pages excerpted from a fully-developed completed script (finalists will be asked to submit complete script), a cover letter of no more than one page describing yourself and your work (including full contact information), a resume, and at least one letter of support from someone who knows you and your work well. Jacksonville State University Southern Playwrights Competition – Seeks to identify and encourage the best of Southern playwriting. First-prize winner receives $1,000 and a full production by the Jacksonville State University Department of Drama. Theatre Trail Writers Competition (Arundel, West Sussex, UK) - The Arundel Festival Theatre Trail, conceived and presented by Drip Action Theatre Company, is now in its fifteenth year and is seeking writers to submit plays for next year’s Trail. It performs at the end of August, on each of the Festival’s eight days, eight short plays at eight different venues all over Arundel. The Trail is firmly established as one of the major components in the Festival and is a great showcase for both new and established writers, both from the UK and beyond. Plays should be between 30 and 40 minutes long, with practicable casting, props and effects. All entries should be submitted to: Drip Action Theatre Trail 2014, c/o SCGIS Ltd, 65a High Street, Arundel, West Sussex, BN18 9AJ. No Fee. One play only per entrant, in hard copy (not e-mail). Premiere Stages Play Festival 2015 (Kean University, Union, NJ) - Premiere Stages will accept submissions of unproduced new plays from playwrights born or currently residing in the greater metropolitan area (New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania). 2015 Yale Institute for Music Theatre (June 13-28, 2015, New Haven, CT) - Established in 2009, the YALE INSTITUTE FOR MUSIC THEATRE is a program of Yale’s Binger Center for New Theatre that bridges the gap between training and the professional world for emerging composers, book writers, and lyricists. The Institute seeks distinctive and original music theatre works to be developed in an intensive two-week summer lab at Yale School of Drama. The Institute matches the authors of the selected works with collaborators, including professional directors and music directors, as well as a company of actors and singers that includes professionals and current Yale students. The lab culminates with open rehearsal readings of each project, presented as part of New Haven’s International Festival of Arts & Ideas. Under the leadership of Artistic Director Mark Brokaw, two original music theatre works will be selected for the 2015 Institute, which will take place June 13–28 in New Haven. The collaborative is a three-floor former thrift store turned into a living museum.
