National Endowment for the Humanities Bridging Cultures Through Film: International Topics – Supports documentary films that examine international and transnational themes in the humanities. These projects are meant to spark Americans’ engagement with the broader world by exploring one or more countries and cultures outside of the United States. Proposed documentaries must be analytical and deeply grounded in humanities scholarship. The Division of Public Programs encourages the exploration of innovative nonfiction storytelling that presents multiple points of view in creative formats. The proposed film should range in length from a standard broadcast length of thirty minutes to a feature-length documentary. Artist Trust Arts Innovator Award – Unrestricted award of $25,000 to 2 Washington State generative artists in any discipline who are originating new work, experimenting with new ideas, taking risks and pushing the boundaries in their respective fields. The award recognizes artists who demonstrate innovation in their art practice. Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Film Festival Grants (Festivals occurring during the 2013 calendar year) – Provides funding for film festivals in the U.S. that have completed at least five festivals as of December 31, 2012, and which have not received prior grants. Screening programs ineligible. Grant requests must target one or more concrete elements within the festival. While the grants are awarded for a variety of programs, film festivals are encouraged to submit proposals that make festival events more accessible to the general public, provide greater access to minority and less visible filmmakers, and help strengthen the connection between the filmmaker and the public. Festivals with a cash budget of less than $100,000 can apply for a grant of up to 10 percent of their cash budget or $2,500, whichever is higher. Festivals with cash budgets from $100,000 to less than $200,000 can apply for a grant of up to $10,000. Festivals with cash budgets from $200,000 to $600,000 can apply for a grant of up to $20,000. Independent Television Service (ITVS) Open Call – Providing finishing funds for single public TV programs from independent U.S. producers on any subject, from any viewpoint, in any genre except fiction. Awards usually range from $150,000-$350,000. Projects must have begun production as evidenced by a work-in-progress tape, and must be possible to complete within 1 year of contract. Tournées Festival Grants to Bring Contemporary French Cinema to U.S. College Campuses – FACE (French American Cultural Exchange), a non-profit dedicated to supporting contemporary creative work in the context of French-American cultural and educational exchange, is accepting applications for colleges to show French films as part of a festival. Screenings must take place within a one-month period, and should consist of a minimum of 5 films. Films may be presented as part of a larger festival of French or International cinema. Schools that show films in 35mm will receive a grant of $2,300, and those that show films on video will receive $1,800. Grants are paid retroactively upon receipt of post-screening documents and materials. Applicants must be affiliated with an American college or university with non-profit status, and must choose at least five films from the FACE website and plan a tentative schedule for screenings. American Institute of Indian Studies Senior Performing and Creative Arts Fellowships – Provides funding to accomplished American practitioners of the arts to travel to India to enhance their skills, develop their capabilities to teach or perform in the U.S., enhance American involvement with India’s artistic traditions, or strengthen their ties with peers in India. Film Independent Producer’s Lab and Sloan Producers Grant - $25,000 development grant plus admission to Film Independent’s Producers Lab and year-round support from Film Independent to a screenplay with a mathematical, scientific, or technological subject. The grant will be awarded to a filmmaker who applies to the Producers Lab and who indicates that they wish to be considered for the Sloan Grant. To be eligible for the Sloan grant the applicant must be attached as producer and possess the rights to the script with which they are applying and the screenplay should have a scientific, mathematical, and/or technological theme and storyline or have a leading character who is a scientist, engineer, or mathematician. All other lab applicants may submit a screenplay on any topic. NOTE: Application must be submitted online through the Film Independent website. BAVC Producers Institute for New Media Technologies (September 27-October 4, 2013, San Francisco, CA) – Week-long social impact laboratory that connects the world’s best social issue documentary filmmakers and partner nonprofit organizations with leading technologists and mentors to develop transmedia tools and story assets to advance shared social change agendas. Seeking documentary films and transmedia projects that have the greatest potential to catalyze action around contemporary social justice issues, with an emphasis on projects that highlight themes of economic justice, educational opportunity and human rights. Filmmakers will apply with partner organizations that already work with the communities they mutually seek to reach, educate, inspire and move to action. The partner organization will commit to participate alongside the producer at the Institute and to use the resulting project to affect social change. Impact mentors will help the participating teams to establish mutual goals and outreach strategies and who will track the resulting projects over the course of the year as the projects are implemented; the results of this impact evaluation will be shared with our field at the following year’s Producers Institute program so mediamakers, organizations, funders, and partners will learn from the results of our collaboration, experimentation, and research. The program consists of a welcome reception, a public conference day, a five-day development laboratory where project teams receive training and support from BAVC mentors to develop and prototype their strategies, projects, prototypes, and pitches, and a final presentation event attended by industry stakeholders, programmers, and funders. Teams may consist of two or three individuals — at least one producer/director and one partner organization representative — and teams may also consist of a second project lead (producer, director, associate producer, outreach coordinator, designer, developer, or transmedia specialist). Project leads (director and/or producer) must be available to attend the entire program in San Francisco. A representative from a key partner organization must also commit to attend from at least Sunday-Tuesday, but preferably to the entire institute. **Turkey Land Cove Foundation** (September 15, 2013-January 31, 2014, Edgartown, MA) – “A personal retreat for motivated women to pursue their professional, educational and artistic goals,” the Foundation provides need-based grants to women in transition, offering time, space, peace and quiet to plan major life changes, finish a body of artistic work, or accomplish other goals for which such a retreat would be appropriate. Their goal is to provide this to women who would otherwise not be able to afford a retreat.
